Mark your calendars and do so boldly! On March 8th, 2012 Brooklyn-based band and art/performance collective MEN will be lighting up Grappa’s Cellar with their radical, fully charged live performance and high-energy dance music. Led by cult icon JD Samson of LE TIGRE, MEN are paving the way in a society where masses are rising up with protest and personally taking on the challenge to evolve the music industry by doing what they find passion in and what they believe is real. Equality, revolution, freedom, awareness, and liberties for the LGBT community, their music speaks in volumes through intense lyricism and an inventive stage show.
The group began in 2007 with the DJ/production/remix team of LE TIGRE members JD Samson and Johanna Fateman. With LE TIGRE on hiatus, the duo began to write new songs and it made sense to merge their efforts with JD’s other project HIRSUTE (Michael O’Neill, JD Samson, Emily Roysdon and Ginger Brooks Takahashi). JD and Michael now comprise the core of MEN and the band enjoys changing the shape of the project and collaborating every tour with new instrumentalists and visual elements.
Selling out the physical copies of their self-released EP “MEN” they followed up with their debut album “Talk About Body” in 2011. As a band that emerged from the feminist/art/punk scene in Brooklyn, this is a rare chance for HK audiences to catch an edgy, DIY-focused band at the top of their game.
Support on the evening comes from DJ BLing – aka Brian Leung, Hong Kong’s renowned veteran broadcaster, who has taken up the role of Music Director in all the 3 local radio stations. As of recent, he’s stretched his edgy music out of the white-light studio and onto the flashy dance floor – ranging from Soul House, Tech House, Minimal / Electro / Progressive Trance, and Indie Dance all the way to Nu-80′s… Let’s BLing it on!
Together with several local DJ fanatics, Brian launched “Are Friends Electric?”, an electronic collective that hosts regular dance parties at various local venues. Brian is gradually extending his electronic antenna to the untapped dance scene of China, DJing extensively at various massive outdoor music festivals in different Mainland cities. Last year, he opened for Anthony Wong Yiu Ming’s concerts in Beijing and Shanghai. Back in Hong Kong, he just opened for the Human League and the Scissor Sisters Concerts in 2011.
Brian is also an outspoken local gay icon hosting the first ever LGBT radio program on the government frequency, RTHK, for the last 6 years.
